How we interpret scriptures informs our values and what we view as sin. The United Methodist Church has been in dialogue over the issue of marrying people of the same sex and ordaining people who are married to someone of the same sex for more than forty years. In February 2019 a Special Called General Conference will vote either to uphold our current stance, create a way to hold a church together even though we have different views on this issue, or split into different conferences based on the different views. To help us understand what the church is facing, Rev. Sue will be doing a two=part Sermon Series called—"Praying Our Way Forward: LGBTQ Issue Facing the UMC."

"Why I Give? Part One”
Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 145:1-11, 21; Mark 12:39-44; Ephesians 2:4-10
November 11, 2018 is the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, the last day of the war that was to have end all wars. We will remember both with a prayer and song. At 11:00 A.M. we will ring the church bell in remembrance. As Salem United Methodist Church plans for 2019, we are being invited to think about why we give to the church? These scriptures offer us some reasons. What reasons do you see in these scriptures?
A Town Hall style meeting will be held in Salem's Community Room during Coffee Hour. Questions may be asked to Rev. Sue and Jo around the three options before the Special Called General Conference in February 23–26, 2019. These options will either allow the church to marry people in same sex relationships and ordain people in same sex relationships or continue to not allow the church to do both.
