Our Pastor—
Rev. Emily Hart
|
Rev. Emily Hart has always loved people and sought ways to connect
with others. You can find her most mornings on early walks with her pups, Teddy
(who wants to meet every animal and human) and Winky (who is still learning who is the boss).
She loves this time to connect with people, either on the phone or out in the community.
If you stop her for a chat, she will be delighted. She believes in embodying her
faith—starting with her feet! Walking and meeting people is more than exercise.
This is part of being the body of Christ in the world by caring for our bodies,
seeing the beauty of the world, and meeting God's people. And, of course, it's fun!
Rev. Emily also loves to spend time thinking and talking about scripture.
So often, scripture becomes rote or overly simplistic. Rev. Emily loves to
let the texts come alive through learning and exploring context, following curiosity,
and applying modern knowledge to ancient texts. She uses this kind of thinking
in preaching, teaching, and in daily conversation.
Before her time at Salem United Methodist Church, she served in Deaf Ministry for
the Baltimore-Washington Conference as a pastor and assistant director for Deaf
Shalom Zone, Inc. This opened her to new ideas about what it means to be
the body of Christ. When are we truly empowering each other, rather than simply "helping"?
She was also formed by Duke Divinity, where she earned an M.Div. in 2016, and by
McDaniel College, where she received a double major in English and Psychology in 2013.
Rev. Emily and her husband Chris married in 2018. They can be found trying
out different take-out menus, playing new video games, or playing with their pups.
